Application of tin bronze bronze sleeve on the stern shaft

Oct 21, 2021

The stern shaft is a shaft that passes through the stern tube and extends out of the stern. One end of the stern shaft is connected to the propeller, and the other end is connected to the gear box or coupling and then to the engine. The stern shaft of a large ship is installed on two bearings, one is called the stern bearing, which is the part of the hull that is in contact with water. The other is called the front copper sleeve, which is connected to the engine room.

The tail shaft is generally composed of flange, shaft, journal, tapered shaft and stud. The shaft journal contains a stern tube assembly. The function of the stern tube is to support the weight of the propeller and the tail shaft (tail bearing). The stern shaft sleeve is installed on the stern tube of the journal.

For ships using water lubrication, bearings are generally installed on the stern shaft journals to prevent friction and corrosion of the shaft journals. The bearings are generally assembled on the shaft with an interference fit.

The stern tube bearing is located inside the stern tube and is below the water level. The working conditions are harsh, that is, it has to withstand the uneven cantilever load when the propeller rotates and the dynamic load when the propeller accidentally hits an obstacle, and it has to withstand the weight and operation of the stern and the propeller. The additional vibration force that may occur in the process, etc., is difficult to check when the stern tube bearing is sailing. In order not to affect the ship due to its failure, the stern shaft copper sleeve must be wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant.
