Crystal structure of Cast Bronze Bushing

Dec 14, 2023

At higher temperatures, the crystal structure of bronze is the alpha phase, also known as the copper matrix. In the alpha phase, the proportion of copper and tin atoms is relatively low. This structure has a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice structure, in which atoms are arranged at the vertices, face-centered and body-centered positions of the lattice.

When bronze cools to lower temperatures, the crystal structure changes to the beta phase, also known as the tin matrix. In the beta phase, the proportion of copper and tin atoms is relatively high. This structure has a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice structure, in which atoms are arranged at the vertices and body-centered positions of the lattice.

The crystal structure and composition of bronze bushings is a complex system that depends on the proportions of copper and tin as well as temperature. Different structures and compositions will have a certain impact on the performance and use of bronze.
