The Difference Between Phosphor Bronze Alloy And Brass

Jan 03, 2022

Phosphor Bronze Alloy and brass are two broad classes of copper alloys. The difference lies in the different properties and uses of ingredients.

Brass: Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. If it is only composed of copper and zinc, it is called ordinary brass. If a variety of alloys composed of more than two elements are called special brass. Such as copper alloy composed of lead, tin, manganese, nickel, lead, iron, silicon. Brass has strong wear resistance.

1. The composition is different:

Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. Brass is divided into ordinary brass and special brass. If it is only composed of copper and zinc, it is called ordinary brass.

If a variety of alloys composed of more than two elements are called special brass, special brass is also called special brass. It has high strength, high hardness, strong chemical corrosion resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties for cutting.

Phosphor bronze, also known as bronze, is a copper-tin alloy. Adding 3-5% tin and 0.03-0.3 phosphorus to copper can greatly improve the strength and toughness of copper.

2. Different colors:

Brass is golden yellow, phosphor bronze is brown, beryllium copper is phantom white, and copper is a little purple.

3. Different hardness:

Phosphor bronze has good elasticity and strong hardness, brass has good toughness, and special brass. It has high strength, high hardness, strong chemical corrosion resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties for cutting.

4. Different uses:

(1) The seamless copper tube drawn from brass is soft and wear-resistant. Brass seamless tubes can be used in heat exchangers and condensers, cryogenic piping, subsea transportation pipes. Manufacture of sheets, bars, rods, pipes, casting parts, etc. Containing 62% to 68% copper, it has strong plasticity and can be used to manufacture pressure-resistant equipment.

In industry and civil use, different materials are selected according to different usage characteristics. If it is made of wires, it is required to be softer, so copper is used. If it is used as a connecting piece, brass is often used for the screw. Most brass has good color, processability, and ductility, and is easy to electroplate or paint.
